"Tour de France" — The Greatest Cycling Race
The Tour de France first started in 1903. This three-week long cycling race features flat, rolling hills and mountain stages and may also feature prologue, individual and team time trials.
There are four competitions within the same race. The Tour de France winner is the person covering the entire course in the shortest amount of time. He receives the Maillot Jaune (yellow jersey) as a trophy on the last day of the race. Each day, the total time is accumulated and the cyclist with the shortest time receives the yellow jersey that he will proudly wear on the next day of the race. It's all cyclists' dreams to wear it at least once in a career, but the world's best cyclists compete to win it on the last day in Paris to be part of the legendary list of winners of the Tour de France.
To win the Tour de France, cyclists must be among the best climbers, but they also need strong Time Trial abilities. Tour de France favorites also need a great sense of tactics. Cycling is a team sport that includes much strategy. A strong team can bring valuable assistance to its leader but the world's best cyclist can loose the Tour de France on a single tactical mistake, mechanical incident or accident.
The suspense is enormous, making the Tour de France a fascinating event to watch. TVs from around the world follow the Tour de France, but it's also the sport event that draws the largest crowds of spectators and fans. Millions of people line the roads to watch the Tour de France cyclists fly by. The most popular spots to watch the Tour de France are where cyclists are the slowest, on the steepest and longest mountain climbs.
Witnessing a Live mountain stage of the Tour de France is an experience that will remain etched in everyone's memory for ever. The 2012 Tour de France promises to be exciting.
